Calculative Biomedicine

The human body is a very intriguing dynamic multiscale complex system. It is extremely robust against daily challenges posed by the environment in which it lives, as well as disease or trauma. Unfortunately, it also has some weaknesses and targeted attacks can be fatal. Moreover, many small disturbances of the body can push it over a tipping point, leading to rapid deterioration of all its major organ systems.

The goal of the Computational Science Lab is to gain a deeper understanding of health and disease, healthy living and aging, by developing data-driven multi-scale models of (patho)physiology. The challenge is to develop a holistic view of health and disease, study the human body as a dynamic multiscale complex system, and apply recent insights from complex systems theory to physiology.
