The Netherlands will develop its own open language model: GPT-NL. This will be an important step towards the transparent, fair and verifiable use of artificial intelligence (AI).

The model is being developed by research organization TNO, the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) and ICT cooperative SURF. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate (EZK) is providing 13.5 million for the development. GPT-NL will be an open model, allowing anyone to see how the underlying software works and how the AI arrives at certain conclusions. The new AI language model will make the Netherlands less dependent on commercial parties. The model will be developed in 2 phases. Phase 1 focuses on the concrete development of the Dutch language model. In phase 2, the program will connect to The National Supercomputer (Snellius), which will provide the computing power needed to run the model.
